Compare & Contrast E-Edition!

Hello!  Today you are going to practice the comprehension skills of Compare & Contrast.   Here are the steps to follow:

1) Click on this link: http://tweentribune.com/junior

2) Choose and click on a Topic from the list on the right side of the page

3) Choose TWO articles from the same Topic (15 minutes)

4) Read and take notes on the main ideas of each article in a Compare & Contrast chart (two-bubble chart).  Be sure to include at least three differences for each article as well as at least two similarities. (15 minutes)

6) Write a Compare & Contrast paragraph based on your chart  (15 minutes)

7) Copy and paste your completed paragraph as a comment on the blog.  OR email to: esimmeth@husd.com OR print

8) If done, you can read other articles, or visit this link for some fun review games: http://www.fun4thebrain.com/english.html

Anyone using the computer for non-academic purposes will lose computer privileges for the rest of the semester!

Comprehension Skills Investigation E-Edition!

Hello!  Today we are moving our Comprehension Skills Investigation (CSI) online.  Here is your task:

1) Go to the website http://tweentribune.com/junior

2) Choose one news article to read and investigate

3) Open the document "Connecting Main Ideas and Details."  Click Here to access this document.  Save the file to your desktop with the filename: lastname.lastnameCSI

4) Complete the questions on the document in complete sentences.  Remember to save often!

5) Send your completed assignment as an email attachment to: esimmeth@husd.com

6) If you finish early, you may search the Internet for song lyrics to discuss in class.

Remember that anyone using the computers for any reason other than for this assignment, or to view any websites other than the ones specified, will receive a zero on this assignment and will lose computer privileges for the rest of the semester. 

Welcome to Accelerated English!

Hello and welcome!  I am so happy to have you in class!  This course is going to be an exciting learning experience for all of us.  I can't wait to meet you and get started!

About Me:  I am thrilled to be joining you at Healdsburg High School!  I just moved to Sonoma County from San Francisco where I taught English and French for six years.  Before that, I lived in France, Illinois, and Connecticut (I am originally from the East Coast).  I love to travel, cook, and enjoy the great outdoors!

About the class:  Be ready to jump in, work hard, and read and speak English every day!  Participation will be a must to make sure you are learning essential language skills.  We are going to work hard and have fun!

Materials:  You will need your textbook in class every day, as well as a folder or binder section for handouts and a notebook or note paper.  You will also need a journal (composition or spiral notebook is fine) for your daily journal activities.
